Casement window not closing in Gurgaon: friction stays, hinges and fixes

A casement window that won't close usually has worn or bent friction stays (the arms it opens on), a sash that has dropped and catches the frame, or a gasket that has come loose and is trapped. Replacing the stays fixes most; a bowed sash needs a new one.

Open uPVC casement window held on friction stay arms

Casement windows swing open like doors, either sideways or top-hung. They seal better than sliders, which is why they're common in uPVC fittings in newer Gurugram and Noida flats. But when one won't close, it really won't: there's no track to push it along, just hinges, a handle and a lock that all have to line up.

The short answer

Open the window and look at the metal arms at the top and bottom of the sash. These friction stays are the commonest failure: bent by wind or worn loose, they hold the sash out of line. If the stays look fine, the sash has dropped, a gasket is trapped, or something is blocking the lock.

Causes, most common first

1. Worn or bent friction stays

A casement in a storm acts like a sail. If it was left open and the wind caught it, the stays bend, and the sash no longer swings back into the frame square. Even without storms, the friction shoes wear and the sash wanders.

2. Dropped sash rubbing the frame

A heavy glass sash on worn stays drops at the open corner, so it catches the sill or frame before closing. You'll see scrape marks on the frame.

3. A loose or trapped gasket

The rubber gasket in the frame or sash can pull out of its groove at a corner and fold over. The window then closes onto a lump and won't sit flush.

4. Lock cams not meeting keeps

If the sash closes but won't lock, the cams aren't reaching the keeps, either because the sash moved or a keep worked loose.

5. Hinges seized with dust or rust

Steel stays with cheap plating rust after a few monsoons and stiffen badly.

What to check

  • Open the window fully and look at both stays from the side. A bent arm or a gap between the arms that differs top and bottom points to stays.
  • Run a finger along the gasket all round. Any loose, twisted or folded section must be pushed back into its groove.
  • Close the sash gently and look for where it touches first. Scuff marks show the drop.
  • Clean the stay tracks with a dry cloth and use a little silicone spray if they're stiff.

Repair or replace?

Friction stays, gaskets, keeps and handles are all replaceable without touching the frame, and on a sound uPVC window that's the right move. Replace the sash or window if the sash is bowed, the profile has no reinforcement, or the window faces wind so strong that casements keep getting damaged; then a fixed light with a smaller opening sash, or an aluminium sliding window, may be a better fit. Our guide on sliding vs casement windows compares them for high floors, and the glossary page on EPDM gaskets explains why a good gasket matters. Price factors are in the uPVC window price guide.

How FabWise handles it

Send us a video of the window opening and closing, and a photo of the stays with the window open, on WhatsApp. Bent stays and trapped gaskets are easy to spot on video. If a visit is needed it's ₹99 in our Delhi NCR cities, adjusted against the bill, and the repair or new window is quoted after that visit.

Prevention

Never leave a casement open in a dust storm or when the monsoon wind picks up; close and lock it. Wipe and lightly lubricate stays twice a year. If you need ventilation while away, use the window's night-vent position or a mesh, not a wide-open sash.

Common questions

Why won't my casement window close properly?

Usually the friction stays, the metal arms the sash opens on, are bent or worn, so the sash swings back crooked. Other causes are a dropped sash rubbing the frame, a gasket pulled out of its groove, or lock cams missing the keeps.

Can friction stays on a uPVC window be replaced?

Yes. Stays come in standard lengths and are screwed into the frame and sash. They are usually replaced as a pair, top and bottom, so the sash moves evenly. The glass and frame stay in place, and new stays usually make the window close square again.

My casement window closes but won't lock. Why?

The locking cams on the sash aren't meeting the keeps on the frame. Either the sash has dropped or a keep has moved. Push the sash firmly while turning the handle; if it locks, the keeps or stays need adjusting.

Khulne wali khidki band nahi ho rahi, kya repair ho sakta hai?

Yes, most often. The usual cause is bent or worn hinge arms (friction stays), which can be replaced. A trapped rubber gasket or a loose lock part are also simple repairs. The whole window rarely needs changing unless the sash itself is bent.
