Chipped glass table top in Gurgaon: re-edge it or replace it?

A chip on a plain (annealed) glass table top can often be ground and polished out, making the top slightly smaller. A chip on a toughened top can't be ground, and a damaged edge can make it shatter later, so it's best replaced. Tell which you have first, then decide.

Custom cut glass top with polished edges fitted on a table

Glass table tops sit on dining tables, office desks, reception counters and coffee tables in homes and offices across Gurugram and Noida. Their edges take knocks from chairs, laptops, utensils and vacuum cleaners, and chips are common. What you can do about a chip depends almost entirely on one thing: whether the top is plain annealed glass or toughened glass.

Plain or toughened: how to tell

  • Look in the corners for a small etched stamp. Toughened glass is usually marked; plain glass usually isn't.
  • Look through polarised sunglasses at an angle in daylight. Toughened glass often shows faint dark patches or stripes.
  • Check the invoice or ask the supplier. Many dining tops are toughened for safety; many cover sheets on wooden tables are plain glass.

If you can't tell, treat it as toughened. That's the safer assumption.

Why table tops chip

Square, unpolished or thin edges

A sharp, unpolished arris edge chips far more easily than a properly bevelled or polished one. Thin cover glass on a wooden table is especially vulnerable.

Point impact at the edge

A chair back knocked into the edge, a steel tumbler dropped on the corner or a vacuum cleaner nozzle hitting it are the usual culprits.

Glass sitting directly on metal or wood

Without rubber pads or bumpers, the glass sits on hard points and rocks. Every knock concentrates force at the contact point and the edge.

Heat and uneven support

A hot dish on one area of a plain glass top, or a top supported only at a few points, can start a crack at the edge, which then flakes.

ToughenedAny chip on edge or cornerReplace; grinding is not possible

Why toughened glass can't be re-edged

Toughened glass gets its strength from a heat treatment that puts its surface under compression. Any cutting, grinding or drilling after toughening releases that stress and usually shatters the whole sheet. That's why toughened tops are made to final size first and toughened afterwards. A chip on a toughened edge is a weak point the stress can run from, which is why a toughened top with an edge chip is better replaced than lived with.

What you can do now

  1. Cover a sharp chip with clear tape so nobody cuts a hand or catches clothing on it.
  2. Don't sand or file the chip yourself.
  3. Add clear rubber bumpers or pads under the top if it sits directly on the frame.
  4. Photograph the chip with a coin for scale, and measure the top.

How a re-edge or replacement is quoted

Table tops come under custom glass installation, quoted from photos and sizes on WhatsApp, with no paid visit. Send a photo of the chip with a coin, the full top and its frame, and the length, width and thickness. For plain glass we'll tell you whether re-edging is realistic; otherwise the new top is cut, edge-polished to your choice and, if you want it safer, toughened, which commonly takes 7–10 days. The glass thickness guide helps you choose.

Choosing a top that won't chip as easily

  • Ask for polished or bevelled edges, not plain-cut.
  • Choose toughened glass for dining tables and anything that takes knocks.
  • Use rubber pads between the glass and the frame.

Common questions

Can a chipped glass table top be repaired?

If it's plain annealed glass, a small edge chip can often be ground and polished out, leaving the top slightly smaller. If it's toughened glass, it can't be ground at all, and a chipped edge is a weak point, so replacing the top is the safe answer.

How do I know if my table glass is toughened?

Look for a small etched stamp in a corner, which most toughened glass carries. Viewed through polarised sunglasses at an angle, toughened glass often shows faint dark patches. If you can't tell, treat it as toughened and don't try to grind it.

Is a chipped toughened glass table dangerous?

It can be. The chip is a point where the glass's built-in stress can release, and a damaged toughened top can break suddenly into many small pieces. Keep heavy and hot items off it and have it replaced rather than living with the chip.

Dining table ka glass kinare se toot gaya, naya kitne din mein banega?

A plain glass top cut to size can be quick. A toughened top has to be cut, edge-polished and then toughened, which commonly takes 7–10 days. Send a photo and the size on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the options and timing.
