Rooftops, railings and glass fronts for restaurants and cafes in Delhi

Many Delhi restaurants and cafes trade from upper floors and rooftops in old markets. FabWise builds what those spaces need (polycarbonate sheds, pergolas, railings and glass fronts from ₹500 per sq ft), planned around narrow stairs and tight lanes.

Polycarbonate sheet roof on a steel frame covering a terrace seating area

In Delhi the best restaurant seats are often upstairs. Hauz Khas Village packs cafes and bars into old buildings with terraces over the lake; Khan Market's restaurants climb to first and second floors above the shops; Greater Kailash's M-Block market, Defence Colony and Shahpur Jat follow the same pattern. Connaught Place has its colonnaded ground floors and rooftops above, and Rajouri Garden's main market has large multi-floor restaurants. A Delhi restaurant fit-out is very often a rooftop and stairs job as much as a glass job.

For the general range, see the restaurants and cafes hub. This page is about Delhi's upstairs and rooftop dining, where access and approvals shape the build more than the design does. Our other services in the city are on the Delhi page.

Rooftop dining: what it takes

  • Weather cover: a polycarbonate terrace shed over part or all of the roof, so the space trades in the June heat and the monsoon. Multiwall sheets add some insulation; UV-coated sheets resist yellowing.
  • Shade with character: an MS pergola for lights, creepers and fabric, primed and painted or powder-coated against rust.
  • A safe, open edge: a glass balcony railing keeps the view; an SS railing is the more economical option. Our guide to balcony railing height and safety covers sensible heights.
  • Getting up there: where the stair is shared or too narrow, some buildings add an MS spiral staircase, subject to the owner's approvals.

Old buildings, narrow stairs, crowded lanes

Most of Delhi's restaurant districts were not built for heavy materials. In Hauz Khas Village and Shahpur Jat the lanes are narrow and vehicles stop well short of the door, so steel sections and glass are carried in by hand. Shed frames are fabricated in lengths that can make the stair turns and are bolted or welded on the roof. Older roof slabs and parapets vary, so we look at them carefully at the visit; the building's structural suitability for a rooftop structure is for the owner and their engineer to confirm.

Heritage and approvals

Connaught Place's facades and colonnades are protected, and rooftop structures in several Delhi markets have drawn attention from the civic bodies over the years. Restaurant licences, fire safety and building approvals are the owner's responsibility. We build to the approved scope and will point out at the visit anything that is likely to need sign-off.

How the job runs

Delhi is a core NCR city for us. The site visit costs ₹99, adjusted against the final bill and usually arranged within 24–48 hours. A written, all-inclusive quote follows, aimed within about 2 hours and valid for 3 days. The 50% advance starts fabrication; toughened glass takes 7–10 days, and steel and shed work follow the schedule in the quote. The balance is due on completion, and installation is planned around service hours.

See sheds and pergolas in Delhi and railings in Delhi. Rooftops already in use often show a sagging shed roof, pergola rust or an overflowing gutter; send photos on WhatsApp. For new work, book the visit and tell us the market and floor.

Common questions

Can you build a rooftop shed for a cafe in Hauz Khas Village?

Yes, subject to the owner's approvals. Lanes there are narrow, so the frame is fabricated in lengths that can be carried in and up the stair, then assembled on the roof. We check the roof and parapet at the visit and quote the shed, railing and any pergola together.

Glass railing or SS railing for a restaurant rooftop?

Glass railing keeps the view open and looks premium; SS railing costs less and is easier to maintain in Delhi dust. Both are quoted after measuring. Many restaurants use glass on the view side and SS elsewhere, which keeps the view where it matters and the cost down.

Rooftop restaurant ke liye permission kaun leta hai?

The restaurant owner or building owner. Licences, fire safety and any approval for a rooftop structure are their responsibility. We build to the approved scope and flag anything at the visit that is likely to need sign-off before work begins.

How long does a rooftop shed take for a Delhi restaurant?

It depends on the size and access. After the 50% advance, the steel frame and sheeting are fabricated to the schedule in the quote, and installation on site usually takes a few days. Narrow stairs and hand-carrying can add time, which we account for in the plan.
