What is frosted glass?

Frosted glass is glass with one face roughened into a matt, milky finish, by acid-etching or sandblasting, so light passes through but images don't. It gives near-total privacy with daylight, which makes it the usual choice for bathroom windows, WCs, office cabins and conference rooms.

How is glass frosted?

There are three common ways, and they look and age quite differently.

Three ways to get a frosted finish
MethodHow it's doneFeel and lookUpkeep
Acid-etchedHydrofluoric acid treatment dissolves a thin layer of the surface in the factorySmooth, satin, very evenEasiest; marks wipe off with a damp cloth
SandblastedFine abrasive is blasted at the surfaceRougher, slightly gritty; can be patterned with stencilsPicks up grease and fingerprints more readily
Frosted filmA translucent vinyl film stuck to clear glassSimilar look from a distanceScratches, lifts at the edges, can be replaced

Acid-etched glass is produced in sheets and is the most consistent. Sandblasting is done by processors and allows logos, bands and patterns, which is why office partitions often have a frosted band at eye level. Film is a retrofit, applied on site. Its pros and cons are set out in frosted film vs frosted glass, and the classic failure is frosted film peeling.

Can frosted glass be toughened?

Yes. Acid-etched and sandblasted glass are toughened in the usual way after cutting and drilling, so they are fine for shower doors, cabin doors and partitions. Sandblasting slightly weakens the treated surface, so heavy sandblasting on a structural pane is something processors prefer to discuss before production. A film on clear toughened glass leaves the glass itself untouched.

Where is it used?

  • Office cabins and meeting rooms: full frosting for HR and doctor's rooms, or a frosted band so people seated inside are screened while the room still feels open. See conference room glass design.
  • Bathroom windows, WC partitions and the lower part of shower screens.
  • Clinic consultation rooms and salon treatment rooms, where privacy is not optional.
  • Wardrobe and kitchen shutters, and doors between living areas.

It is the wrong choice where a view matters, and it doesn't do anything for sound: a frosted cabin wall blocks sight, not speech. Acoustic privacy comes from glass thickness, sealing and gaps around the door, which our guide to office glass partition sound and privacy covers.

Which side should the frosted face go?

The frosted face is the one that shows grease. Practice varies by setting: in showers and bathrooms it usually faces the dry side so water doesn't sit on the textured surface and turn it patchy; in offices it usually faces inward, away from the corridor where hands and trolleys touch the glass. Note that a wet frosted surface turns partly transparent while it is wet, which is another reason to keep it away from the shower spray.

How do you identify the type?

  1. Run a fingernail across the frosted face. Film has a slight edge where it ends and a plastic feel; etched and sandblasted glass feel like glass.
  2. Compare texture: acid-etched is silky; sandblasted feels finely gritty.
  3. Look at the corners for the toughening stamp; it is often visible on the clear border of a sandblasted pane.

Common confusions

  • Frosted vs fluted: fluted glass is clear glass shaped into ribs; frosted glass is flat with a matt surface. Fluted shows more.
  • Frosted vs tinted: tinted glass is coloured but still transparent.
  • Frosted vs back-painted: back-painted glass is opaque; frosted is translucent.
  • Frosted vs obscure patterned glass: traditional patterned window glass (with small textured designs) also obscures, but is rolled, not etched.

Care

Clean frosted glass with water and a little mild soap on a soft cloth, then dry it. Avoid oily cleaners and wax-based polish, which soak into the texture and leave dark patches. Fingerprints on sandblasted glass come off with a little isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre cloth. Some processors offer an anti-fingerprint sealer on sandblasted panels; ask before production.

Common questions

Which is better, frosted film or frosted glass?

Frosted glass (acid-etched or sandblasted) lasts as long as the glass and doesn't peel, bubble or scratch off, so it is better for doors and anything touched daily. Film costs less, goes on existing glass and can be changed when you redesign, but it lifts at the edges and scratches over a few years. For a new partition, specify frosted glass.

Can you see through frosted glass at night?

Not clearly. Frosted glass diffuses light both ways, so when a room is lit at night, outsiders see glow and perhaps a shadow moving close to the glass, but no detail. One caution: a wet frosted surface becomes partly transparent while wet, so in bathrooms the frosted face should be on the dry side.

Does frosted glass stop sound in an office cabin?

No. Frosting only changes what you see. Sound passes through the glass panel and especially through gaps around the door and at the ceiling. A quieter cabin needs thicker or laminated glass, seals on the door and closed gaps at the top and bottom of the partition.

Frosted glass pe daag kaise hataye?

Use water with a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth, then dry it. For greasy fingerprints on sandblasted glass, a little isopropyl alcohol on a cloth usually works. Avoid oily sprays, wax polishes and abrasive pads: they sink into the texture and leave darker patches that are hard to remove.
