Window panes in older frames
Plain annealed glass can be cut on the spot to fit, which makes a cracked window pane one of the simpler repairs. The catch in older houses is the frame. Steel frames held their glass with putty that has gone hard; removing it without bending the frame takes care, and the new pane is bedded in fresh sealant. Toughened glass is a different job
A shower panel, a frameless door or a shop front is toughened glass, and toughened glass cannot be cut once it is made. When one breaks, it shatters into small cubes, and the replacement has to be measured and produced, which generally takes 7 to 10 days. Table tops and mirrors
A chipped glass table top can sometimes be polished if the chip is at the edge; a crack across the top means a new one.
