The new building keeps the old plot frontage, so the gate opening is fixed by the boundary wall and the internal road outside it. Old pillars, new gates
Many original brick pillars were built decades ago for a light gate. A heavier sheet-and-pattern gate hung on them can pull the hinge side out of plumb, which is how a gate ends up sagging and dragging on the floor. At the visit the pillar is checked; where it is weak, the new gate hangs on a steel post fixed beside it, or your mason strengthens the pillar first. A broken gate hinge on the existing gate is often a symptom of the same thing.
Finishes that survive the monsoon on an old street
Mild steel rusts wherever water sits, and on these streets that means the bottom rail, which takes splash from the lane. Primer and enamel paint are the minimum. Powder coating gives a harder, more even finish but needs the gate built in sections that fit the coating oven, which shapes the design of a long sliding gate. - Agree the gate design and the cost share with the other floor owners, and name one person as the contact.
- Check whether a small truck can reach your gate. Long gate leaves are carried in by hand when it cannot.
- Tell neighbours on shared walls about welding and drilling days; that work is planned for daytime.
