Main Gates and Metal Fabrication for Punjabi Bagh Kothis
On a wide Punjabi Bagh plot, the main gate is a piece of engineering before it is a design: post size, hinge or track, a wicket door for daily use and a finish that survives the monsoon. Gates, spiral stairs and safety doors are made to measure and quoted after a ₹99 site visit.

What carries the weight of a large gate
A double-leaf gate across a two-car opening can weigh several hundred kilograms once the infill panels are on. That weight acts on very few points:
- The posts. Hollow sections or RCC pillars with embedded plates, sized for the leaf. Hinges bolted into a brick pillar without a plate eventually pull loose.
- The hinges. Heavy-duty barrel or bearing hinges, often a pair at the top and a pivot at the bottom for very large leaves.
- The drop rod and stopper. A leaf that is not held at the centre swings in wind and strains the hinges.
- The frame bracing. A diagonal brace inside the leaf stops it from sagging at the free end over the years.
When those details are skipped, the gate starts to drag within a couple of monsoons; gate sagging and dragging describes the symptoms.

The wicket door
On a big gate, a small pedestrian door set into one leaf, or beside it, saves opening the main leaves dozens of times a day. It needs its own frame and lock and must be planned into the leaf from the start. It is one of the most useful additions on a Punjabi Bagh gate.
Design: traditional, plain or laser-cut
Older kothis tend to have ornate cast-style gates; new floors lean towards plain flat-bar or sheet designs, often with a panel of CNC laser-cut jaali for a pattern that still gives privacy. The main gate design guide has examples. A solid sheet gate catches more wind than an open one, so the hinges and posts must be heavier.
Finish for a gate that faces the road
Mild steel rusts without protection. A good finish is a cleaned surface, a zinc-rich or epoxy primer, then paint or powder coating. Powder coating is tougher but must be done before installation, so welding on site has to be minimal. If you plan a motor later, decide now; see sliding gate automation.
How the job runs
Book a ₹99 site visit, usually within 24 to 48 hours. We measure the opening, check post strength and the slope of the drive, and send a written, all-inclusive quote within about 2 hours, valid for 3 days. Fabrication starts after a 50% advance and happens in the workshop; installation needs the drive clear and, for a large gate, a crane or several hands. The balance is due on completion.

Common questions
How much does a large main gate cost in Punjabi Bagh?
MS gates have no fixed published rate, because width, height, steel sections, design infill, a wicket door and the finish all change the price. After the ₹99 site visit you get a written, all-inclusive quote valid for 3 days. Payment is 50% to start fabrication and 50% on completion.
Can a wicket door be added to an existing gate?
Sometimes. If the leaf frame is strong enough, a framed opening can be cut and a door fitted with its own hinges and lock. On older or lighter gates, the leaf may sag once it is cut, and a new leaf is better. Send a photo on WhatsApp first and we will tell you which is likely.
Powder coating or paint for a main gate?
Powder coating gives a harder, more even finish and usually lasts longer, but it is applied in a booth before installation. Paint can be touched up on site and suits gates with site welding. Either way, good surface preparation and primer matter most against Delhi's monsoon.
Gate ka kaam ghar ke rebuild ke time karwana chahiye?
Yes, ideally. Gate posts, embedded plates, the track foundation for a sliding gate and any motor wiring are much easier to build in while the structure is going up. The gate itself can be fitted near the end, but its supports should be planned early.
