Grills, Railings & Windows in Vasundhara, Ghaziabad

Vasundhara was developed by the UP Awas Evam Vikas Parishad as the Vasundhara Awas Yojna, a scheme of about 1,317 acres divided into 19 sectors, with a main road splitting it roughly in half and a long green belt on one side. Its civic upkeep passed to the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam in 2002. The housing is a mix of Parishad-built houses and flats, independent plots and later group housing, with some sectors, such as Sector 17, sitting along the old Hapur Road alignment. Much of it is a generation old now, and in Vasundhara that means the steel is due before the glass.

Why the grills go first

Parishad-era houses and flats were commonly fitted with mild steel grills and railings that were painted once and rarely again. Mild steel rusts wherever paint has cracked and water sits, which in Ghaziabad means the bottom rail of every grill and the base of every railing post. A rusted grill can usually be cleaned and repainted if the section is still sound; one that has lost metal at the joints is better replaced.

Staircase railings and a spiral stair to the roof

In Vasundhara's independent houses the internal staircase railing is often the original MS one, and a handrail that has worked loose is a common sign of age. Replacing it with a stainless steel or MS staircase railing is usually a one-day fixing job once the railing has been made to measure. Many houses also want proper roof access without stealing floor area inside. An MS spiral staircase fits in a small footprint in a courtyard, side passage or rear setback. Windows in Parishad-built homes

Older houses here often have steel or early aluminium windows with single plain glass. Openings in Parishad housing are not always square after decades of settlement and repainting, so new windows are measured opening by opening, never from a drawing. An aluminium sliding window is the familiar choice; a uPVC window seals better against dust and noise from the main roads. Cracked window glass in a sound old frame can just be re-glazed.

Shade on the roof
