Metal staircase wobbling in Gurgaon: why it shakes and how it's made solid

A metal staircase wobbles because it isn't anchored firmly at the base or top, a weld has cracked, or the sections were too light for the span. Loose anchor bolts are the easiest fix; cracked welds and undersized stringers need proper structural repair. Treat any new wobble as a safety issue.

MS spiral staircase rising to a terrace with a central column and steel treads

Spiral and straight MS staircases are everywhere in Gurugram and Noida: up to the terrace water tanks of builder floors, to a mezzanine in a shop, or to a rooftop room. A bit of bounce is normal in a light steel stair. A new wobble, a side-to-side sway or a creak that wasn't there before is not, and it usually means something structural has loosened or cracked.

The short answer

Find where the movement starts. If the whole stair moves at its base, the anchor bolts into the floor have loosened. If it sways at the top, the landing fixing has failed. If one tread or section moves on its own, a weld has cracked. Each needs a different fix, and the last two are urgent.

Why metal stairs start to wobble

Base plate bolts loose or rusted

The central column of a spiral stair, or the bottom of the stringers on a straight stair, is bolted to the floor through a base plate. Terrace stairs stand in rain; the bolts rust and the plate lifts slightly. Each step then rocks the stair.

No proper fixing at the top

A spiral stair should be fixed at the top landing, and often at intermediate points to a wall. If it only rests against the slab, it sways like a mast.

Cracked welds at treads or stringers

Treads welded to a central column, or stringers joined to landings, carry concentrated loads. Thin, short welds crack with use, especially after rust has started at the joint.

Sections too light for the span

A long straight stair made from light angle or thin tube will bounce no matter how well it's anchored. That's a design limit, not a loose part.

Railing loose

Sometimes it's the railing, not the stair, that moves, which feels just as alarming. If so, see handrail loose.

Checks you can make

  • Look at the base plate: are all bolts present and tight, and is the plate sitting flat?
  • Check the top: is the stair bolted or welded to the landing or slab, or just resting there?
  • Look at the weld under each tread and where stringers meet landings for cracks or rust lines.
  • Have someone climb slowly while you watch from below to see where movement starts.

Repair or replace?

Re-anchoring, top fixings and weld repairs make most sound stairs solid again. Replacement is better when the column or stringers are rusted thin at the base, the stair is badly undersized, or it was never built to suit the opening. A new MS spiral staircase is designed around the actual floor-to-floor height and anchor points; our spiral staircase terrace guide covers sizes and fixings. Matching staircase railing can be added. For a shop or warehouse stair that serves an upper level, see MS mezzanine floor. The basics of steel choice are in the mild steel glossary entry.

How FabWise handles it

Send a video of someone climbing the stair while you film the base and top, plus photos of the base plate and any welds you're worried about, on WhatsApp. If it needs an on-site check in our Delhi NCR cities, the visit is ₹99, adjusted against the bill. Staircase repairs and new stairs are quoted after the visit.

Prevention

Terrace stairs take the full monsoon. Keep the base plate area draining, not ponding, and repaint the base and welds every couple of years before rust gets started. Check bolts at the base once a year. Don't hang heavy loads from the stair or use it to haul water tanks without checking it can take them.

Common questions

Is it normal for a spiral staircase to wobble?

A small bounce in a light steel stair is normal. Side-to-side sway, rocking at the base, or a new creak or click is not. Those usually mean loose anchor bolts, a missing top fixing or a cracked weld, and the stair should be checked before more use.

How do I stop my metal staircase shaking?

Tighten or replace the anchor bolts at the base, and make sure the top is properly fixed to the landing or slab. If the shaking comes from one tread or section, a cracked weld needs repairing. Long, bouncy stairs may need a mid support.

Terrace ki loha seedhi hilti hai, kya ye safe hai?

Treat it as unsafe until it's checked, especially if the movement is new. Look at the base bolts and the top fixing, and for cracks at the welds. Stop using it if you see a crack, and send us photos and a video on WhatsApp.

Can a wobbly staircase be repaired or does it need replacing?

Most can be repaired with new anchors, a proper top fixing and weld repairs. Replacement is needed when the column or stringers are rusted thin, or the stair was undersized for its span from the start. A video of someone climbing it usually shows us which case you're in.
