Gates, Spiral Stairs and Steel Work in Defence Colony
Defence Colony metal work splits by house type: original homes with front lawns need a driveway gate and often a spiral stair to the roof, while rebuilt floors need a wide stilt gate and safety doors. Every piece is fabricated to measure in mild steel and quoted after a site visit.

Metal fabrication in Defence Colony means gates first. The colony's original houses usually sit behind a front lawn with a driveway and a low boundary wall, while the rebuilt floors next door have a stilt car park opening straight onto the lane. Those two plans call for quite different gates, and the older homes add a second item that rebuilt floors rarely need: a stair to reach the roof from outside.
Driveway gate or stilt gate?
| Style | Why it suits Defence Colony | Price |
|---|---|---|
| MS main gate | Original houses with a driveway and space for the leaves to swing inwards | Quoted after visit |
| MS sliding gate | Rebuilt floors where the stilt opens onto a narrow, parked-up lane | Quoted after visit |
| MS spiral staircase | Two-storey original houses with no internal stair to the roof | Quoted after visit |
| MS safety door | Separate entrances to floors let out to tenants | Quoted after visit |
On an original house, an MS main gate with two swing leaves keeps the colony's open look: vertical bars or a part-sheet lower half so the lawn is still seen from the lane. The main gate design guide shows the common patterns. A rebuilt floor's stilt may be wide enough for three or four cars, and swinging leaves of that size would block the lane; an MS sliding gate slides along the boundary wall instead.
Heavy leaves and old pillars
A wider, heavier gate on a pillar built decades ago is the usual cause of a gate sagging and dragging. If the pillar has no steel inside, we either recommend strengthening it or reduce the leaf weight with a lighter section. Worn pins are covered in gate hinge broken.
A spiral stair to the roof
Many original Defence Colony homes were built as two storeys with roof access only through a hatch, or none at all. Owners who now use the roof for water tanks, solar panels or a small garden often add an MS spiral staircase on the side or rear setback. It takes a small footprint, but it needs a proper base, a landing that matches the roof level and a handrail all the way up. The spiral staircase terrace guide covers diameters and tread widths. Because it sits outside the house, ask your RWA and check the MCD position before ordering.
Safety doors for split houses
Some original houses are now divided, with the ground floor occupied by the owner and the first floor let out with its own entrance. Each entrance then wants an MS safety door that locks independently. It is fabricated to the opening and fixed into the frame or masonry around it.
Finish for a leafy colony
Defence Colony's trees drop leaves and sap onto gates, and lawn sprinklers wet the bottom rail every day. Mild steel left with a single coat of paint rusts first at the base. Primer and two coats is the minimum; powder coating lasts longer on gates that face the garden.
Before booking and on the day
- Measure where cars actually park in the lane; a sliding gate needs a clear wall run to slide into.
- Tell us if the house is being rebuilt soon; there is little point in a new gate before the builder's stilt is finished.
- Long gate leaves may be welded in two parts and joined on site if the lane is too tight for a vehicle.
The ₹99 visit, usually within 24 to 48 hours, covers measuring and checking the pillars. You get a written, all-inclusive quote in about 2 hours, valid for 3 days; fabrication starts after a 50% advance and the balance is due on completion. The MS gate price guide explains the cost drivers.

Common questions
How much does a new main gate cost in Defence Colony?
There is no fixed rate. The price depends on the width and height, the steel sections, the design and infill, the finish and any pillar work. After the ₹99 site visit you get a written, all-inclusive quote valid for 3 days. The MS gate price guide explains what pushes the figure up or down.
Can a spiral staircase be added outside an old two-storey house?
Usually, if there is a side or rear setback with room for its diameter and a sound base. It needs a landing at roof level and a continuous handrail. Since it is outside the house, check with your RWA and the MCD position first; we measure and design after that.
Gate ke neeche jung lag jata hai, kya karein?
Rust at the bottom rail usually comes from sprinklers, puddles or soil touching the steel. Lift the gate off the ground, keep a drain clear beneath it and use primer plus two coats or powder coating. On a badly rusted gate, the bottom rail can sometimes be cut out and replaced.
Do you make gates for rebuilt Defence Colony floors with stilt parking?
Yes. Stilt gates are usually wide, so a sliding gate on a ground track is common where the lane is tight. We check the boundary wall length for the gate to slide into and the level of the track before quoting.
Every metal fabrication style
- MS main gateA swing gate in mild steel for a house, builder floor or farmhouse, made to the opening and finished against rust.
- Sliding gateA gate that runs sideways on a track, for a driveway too short for a gate to swing. Motor-ready if you want one later.
- Window safety grillFixed or openable steel grills for windows and balconies, made to each opening.
- Steel safety doorA steel grill door in front of the main door, so it can stand open for air without standing open to the corridor.
- Metal staircaseSpiral or straight steel stairs to a terrace, mezzanine or loft, fabricated to the floor-to-floor height.
- Steel mezzanine floorA steel-framed extra floor inside a shop, warehouse or high-ceiling office, for storage or desks.
